Karen Yue, Singapore
(2008-09-01)
A TEAM of
entrepreneurs, two of which are from the travel
industry, have come together to establish Heart Travel,
the first social enterprise travel agency in Singapore.
While Heart Travel functions like an typical travel
agency, its key objective is to hire and train less
privileged Singaporeans to become travel consultants.
xGlobal Tour Management (GTMC) CEO, Mr Samson
Tan, will lead the team at Heart Travel, and he will be
supported in the daily operations of the business by
general manager, Mr Sam How, who has been with Ananda
Travel, Euro-Asia Holidays, Global Tour Management and
Asia-Euro Holidays prior to this
appointment.
Heart Travel will be working with
the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports,
and various grassroots organisations, such as People’s
Association and Community Development Council.
Mr
How said: “The travel industry is increasingly burdened
with manpower shortage. Newly graduated
Singaporeans are not willing to join the trade at a low
starting pay, while the qualified ones are asking for
sky-high salaries.
“On the other hand, there is
a pool of Singaporeans who are in urgent need of a job
and could contribute to the travel trade. Our aim is to
help these people. Those who come to us are not required
to have prior experience in the travel industry. We will
train them and they will be paid a salary. Should they
leave Heart Travel in future, they will bring along
relevant job experiences with
them.”
